Creating New Years resolutions that further your creative vocation

Ah yes, the eternal pressure around New Years resolutions and the guilt around needing to make each year better than the last. While it might be cliche and feel silly or overwhelming, the new year can just be viewed as a time to set intentions instead of hard and fast goals.

As the new year falls in the middle of winter (in America), oftentimes people are staying inside more and in a bit of a hibernation period (also known as the “post-holiday slump”) - this can be a great time to turn internally and explore. This exploration process can be one of tinkering and experimenting without expectation of a specific outcome. For example, try cooking or baking a new recipe, sign up for Masterclass.com to listen to someone in the top of their field discuss something that interests you, buy a crafting kit with holiday money, or go thrifting for new interior design pieces. This exploration process can lead to unexpected connections and a fresh style to your primary craft. Experimenting with a medium outside your usual comfort zone can be an incredibly powerful way to stretch your creative muscles. Whether art is a hobby or your full-time career, humans were born to create and pushing away creativity stifles your soul.

Instead of making New Year’s resolutions like “write an entire novel and publish it by the end of 2025”, maybe try an intention to “explore something that excites you everyday”.
